Over the past 14 years, Dr Alexandra Horowitz has spent her days at the Dog Cognition Lab at Barnard College in New York trying to understand what it's like to be a dog; how they see the world and how they see us.
But puppies are something else entirely. At the start of the pandemic, her home became the lab when her family adopted a puppy from a litter born to a rescue dog.
From the moment of she was born, Dr Horowitz documented development in her pup and in herself as the furry bundle of energy became a part of the family. Her new book is called The Year of the Puppy: How Dogs Become Themselves.
