The story of New Zealand is the story of the sea and the creatures who live in it. As long as humans have inhabited these islands, native fish and shellfish have been front and center as a way to trade, feast, celebrate and mourn says Robert Vennell. He works in the Natural Science department of the Auckland War Memorial Museum. Sacred and inspiring, their world is so different from ours, but so essential to it. Vennell wants all New Zealanders to have a greater appreciation of the mysterious world under the waves and why it is so essential to our identity. His new book is called Secrets of the Sea: The Story of New Zealand's Native Sea Creatures.
