Governors Bay Jetty to be rebuilt after the community took ownership of it

From Afternoons, 1:40 pm on 10 May 2022

The Governors  Bay community weren't going to accept a Christchurch council decision to close the 140 year old jetty following earthquake damage in 2011.

Back in 2015 the council decided at a meeting that it wasn't interested in saving the 300 metre long structure and instead were getting ready to demolish it.

Instantly at that meeting a group emerged, hellbent on restoring the iconic landmark, buying it from the council for a dollar.

People can still donate to help the project here.

Work will start on the transformation of the jetty in August this year. Nick Harwood's part of the group and handily a geotechnical engineer, he talks to Jesse about the project.
