Nelson council no longer accepting batteries at landfill

From Afternoons, 1:40 pm on 18 October 2021

Nelson City Council is one of a growing number of councils to discourage the dumping of batteries in its landfill.

The council says from 1 November it will no longer be accepting batteries, particularly lithium-ion batteries, or e-waste as refuse at the dump, and is actively discouraging people from binning batteries.

But the council is stopping short of implementing the changes through a bylaw or legislation.

City councillor and infrastructure committee chair Brian McGurk tells Jesse why this E-waste can be so dangerous.

Many dead batteries gathered for recycling.
