Library marked on the world wide stage for their music

From Afternoons, 1:40 pm on 20 August 2021

Fun-loving staff at a Canterbury library have won fourth place in an international library song challenge with their original song 'Down at Your Library'.

Laura Caygill - Waimakariri Libraries' community experiences and diversity team leader - kicked off the idea, sharing a post about the competition on the staff Facebook page.

The next day, Laura's colleague Amy Hallmark had already written the lyrics and another colleague Ben Eldridge said he'd put them to music.

"We were in fits of laughter when we realised A, how funny it was and B, we could actually do it."

The Waimakariri Library staff have had great feedback for their song and music video which was shot over one "really hilarious day", Caygill says.

"We thought it had potential to really uplift people but the time of it, in lockdown at the moment, it's really hitting that mark and we're just so thrilled that we put it all together.

"People are seeing how much fun we had making it and really getting in the spirit of things."

The Music in Libraries competition was run by the professional librarian's network New Professionals Special Interest Group (NPSIG). There were 70 entries from libraries in 17 different countries and the winning song was from Serbia:
