Auckland high school student Maretta Brown was one of the successful entrants in this year's Stand Up Stand Out (SUSO) music competition.

Maretta chats to Jesse Mulligan about her music and plays her original song 'Save Me'.

This audio is not downloadable due to copyright restrictions.

Even though Maretta describes herself as shy, she has been singing and performing from a very young age and writing songs she was ten.

Growing up in a big musical family there were always a lot of instruments around the house and different genres playing, she says.

"Singing and playing the guitar always found amazing to me … and was a great thing for me to turn to throughout my entire life … and [it helped me] really gain confidence."

Maretta tells Jesse she wrote the song 'Save Me' during a difficult time.

"What this song means to me is having hope in God … I come from a very strong family who have strong faith. Having that connection and interaction with God is really important to me … [the song is] about having hope with God."

Look out for Maretta performing at Auckland's free event Music in Parks this summer.
