A new Kiwi-designed app called MyHooman is being described as 'Tinder for rescue animals'.

Louise Burgess from Auckland shelter Last Lamppost Dog and Animal Rescue tells Jesse Mulligan MyHooman has already made her job easier - and will help out many animals in need.

Louise has rehomed 66 dogs since she started work at the shelter this April - most of which had been dumped, neglected or abused, she says.

These are among thousands of such animals in New Zealand, Louise says. Better public education about animal welfare and tighter legislation are needed to address the problem.

"There have to be stricter rules on who can have puppies, making it affordable to desex your dog, and putting it out there that if people need help desexing their dogs they can contact somebody… We should be putting money into desexing the dogs and helping people and also educating people."

"We have to change something because there are a lot of abused animals in this country and people are not aware of it … [Animals] have got feelings just like us and they hurt just like us."

MyHooman is free to use and will initially focus on dog adoptions. Shelters can sign up now and those looking to adopt a pet via the platform will be able to do so from December.
