Strangest election in NZ’s history: Wellington Central 1878

From Afternoons, 3:27 pm on 15 October 2020

The general election is this Saturday and we are all busy voting in our different electorates.

Dr Grant Morris from the Victoria University of Wellington says Wellington Central can lay claim to the most bizarre electorate battle in New Zealand’s history.

It was the 1878 City of Wellington by-election won by George E Barton and involved public feuding and one of the candidates being imprisoned for a month.
