April the first marks the anniversary of a watershed moment for conservation in New Zealand. On 1 April 1987, the Department of Conservation (DOC) was born from the merger of parts of the Forest Service, the Department of Lands and Survey and the Wildlife Service.

In our visit to the sound archives of Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision today, Sarah Johnston is going to play recordings which shine a light on the changing nature of conservation work in New Zealand over the past 100 years.
