Eric Dozier is an expert on gospel music and African American musical traditions. He started playing the piano at church at the age of 4 and has travelled the world for 20 years working with choirs, community groups and schools.
He's been the musical director of the Harlem Gospel Choir and for the Children's Theatre Company of New York. And he's coming to Auckland to hold workshops on the weekend of the 6 July.
He tells us about the history of gospel music, and looks at its role in protest and community building.
