Before Xbox, before Gameboy there were board games. Games of cardboard and glue, of dice and card and tiny metal figures that could be played on tabletop in caravan on a rainy day.

But board games haven't died a slow digital death, in fact they are enjoying something of a renaissance. Shem Phillips is a board game designer in Waikanae, and what started as a hobby is now a full time job.

In 2014 he used Kickstarter to fund the first in a series of Viking-themed board games.

In 2017 he was nominated for the Spield Des Jahres, a kind of Oscars for board games. This lead to a huge boost in sales and international partnerships with other publishers.

His company is called Garphil Games

His latest game is here.
