Even though winter is not the time of year we most feel like eating raw food it's still important to have some in our diet, says Megan May from Little Bird Organics. She shares some ideas and a recipe for a spicy hot cacao drink.

Cacao is the same thing as cocoa essentially but its process doesn't include heating. It retains around 400 times the vitamins and minerals of coca and is high in magnesium and uplifting, Megan says.

In this cacao drink, you can use any sweetener you like in place of coconut sugar.
To give it more energy, you can add maca powder.

Megan's suggestion for eating raw in winter:

  • Sprouts (nutrient-dense, easy to grow and cheap to buy)
  • Fermented foods
  • Fresh winter greens

She also likes to make socca – a kind of chickpea-based flatbread or pancake which originated in Nice, France.

It usually just contains chickpeas, water and salt with optional herbs and garlic.

Socca can be cooked either on the stovetop or in the oven.

It's best eaten fresh or the crispiness disappears, Megan says.
