RNZ's Simon Morton has been exploring some of the badly damaged parts of Kaikoura on his mountain bike and has been shocked at what he's seen.
Morton says parts of State Highway 1 have been devastated.
"There are parts of it that I moved along this morning where the whole left hand lane has essentially dropped 2 to 3 metres."
He says looking at the area around the Clarence River, "it's like the ground has been reformatted."
