Paparoa is little more than a village of around 270 people, situated in a peaceful valley on a headwater of the Kaipara Harbour. In the late 1800's it was a major port and ship building centre where the export of Kauri logs guaranttee plenty of work for the locals. Now, with its historic buildings and natural beauty, Paparoa has become a popular hub for surrounding farmers and the many artisans who have flocked to the area.
