1:15 New meaning to a 'rock concert' at Canterbury University

A special performance is talking place this weekend in Ōtatauhi Christchurch to mark 150 years of University of Canterbury.

Composed by UC's Head of Composition Dr Reuben de Lautour and taonga pūoro artist and composer Mahina-Ina Kingi-Kaui, the work features kōhatu - river stones.

Both Dr de Lautour and Mahina both speak to Jesse.

On any given day in the capital, there's a chance that you'll stumble into a man dressed as a tree, playing the saxophone.

The man beneath the costume is Wellington musician Jarrod Wood.

1.35 Costume maker extraordinaire Denise Hailes on her colourful career

It's always a lot of fun to see people dressing up as giant animals or other objects, prancing around with difficulty see where they are going... but have you ever wondered how these larger than life costumes are made?

My guest now Denise Hailes has been the person behind many such a creation.

Her current work - a giant guinea pig is on the stage in Nightsong's production I Want To Be Happy, at the Herald theatre in Auckland.

During the course of her 37 year career, she's become the go-to for making mascots, including zebras, dinosaurs, Vikings, biscuits, bacon, dogs frogs, ducks and hogs. Denise speaks to Jesse!

Humility, authenticity and vulnerability sound great, but these qualities  have turned too many people into virtue signaling, self-absorbed narcissists says Lucinda Holdforth. She's a former speech¬writer for Australia's ex-Labor leader Kim Beazley. She believes the quest for these attributes encourage people to put self before community have replaced courage, truthfulness and decency. She takes aim at self-help gurus and challenges everyone to examine the values shaping our society in her book, 21st Century Virtues: How They Are Failing Our Democracy.

Coming up on Voices - supporting their villages back home in Samoa is one of the motivators for a group of young men who have been employed as part of the Recognised Seasonal Employee or RSE programme. They group will work in the small rural town of Matapihi, our Tauranga based RNZ producer Justine Murray finds our more about the men and soon realises their passion for singing.
