1:15 Bias Behind 80 per cent of Gender Pay Gap

Gender pay gap

Reasons behind the gender pay gap have been revealed, and show bias accounts for 80 per cent of the difference between men and women.

The research shows education, occupation or industry, only accounts for twenty per cent of pay inequality. The Minister for Women, Paula Bennett, has just released the research, and says she's disappointment with the findings. The report is called Empirical evidence of the gender pay gap in New Zealand.

It's the first comprehensive study of the reasons the gap exists, since 2003. It's joint research by The Ministry For Women and AUT.

Professor Gail Pacheco authored the research, and she is a professor in Economics at AUT, the director of the New Zealand Work Research Institute.

1:25 Wellington: Bike theft capital?

Police and Wellington City Council are joining together for a new bicycle security campaign, after a spate of bike thefts in the city. The thefts have even prompted enthusiasts to start a social media campaign, called Wellington Stolen Bicycles, with the Facebook page reporting multiple thefts per day.

Patrick Morgan is from the Cycling Advocates Network in Wellington.

To show just how easy it is to steal a bike, here is CCTV footage of thieves taking bikes from the Century City Apartments Bike Park in Tory Street last month:

The thieves in the video above were caught.

2:20 Music Feature: The Post Punk Era

Bill E is a Wellington DJ, the man behind regular "Atomic 80s" and "24 Hour Party People" dance nights held in various clubs around the capital since 1996. Though he's a fan of 80s pop it's the post-punk era (late 70s to mid 80s) that he is an authority on. This afternoon he talks to Jesse and plays a bunch of records to illustrate this short-lived genre.

3:10 Sarah Wilson: Anxiety, a lifetime companion

Sarah Wilson, author of two wildly successful books about quitting sugar, has struggled most of her life with something much more difficult to tame: anxiety.  She says there were times when it was so bad, she contemplated taking her own life.

She writes about what triggers her anxiety,  and treatments that have helped her in her new book, First, We Make the Beast Beautiful.
