3:33 Southern story: Gone in a flash
In December 2011 Golden Bay experienced as much rainfall in one day as it usually would for the whole of the month. 764mm fell over 48 hours, mostly east of Takaka township - from Clifton to Wainui Bay bordering the Abel Tasman National Park.
Lahar-like flows of debris swept whole trees across the land, wiping out homes and gardens. Miraculously there were no human deaths, but in such an isolated part of the country with a great growing climate, many people rely on their gardens for fresh food.
Sage Forest visits some missing gardens and talks to folk about how they were gone in a flash.
