It's not every day grown men dress as Spiderman and Captain Kirk, and women as Hell Cat and Gravity Girl. Comic Con is four days of the pure adoration of all things fantastic - sci-fi, comic book and pop culture in San Diego every year. Over the past 40 years, Comic Con has grown from a gathering of geeks to become the world's biggest focus group for major movie and TV studios.
The tiny Southland town of Mataura, famous for its paper mill and freezing works; birthplace of the famous New Zealand pacer, Cardigan Bay; All Black Justin Marshall was born there, and current AB halfback Jimmy Cowan grew up there.
Mataura is regarded by locals as a town in decline, even more so after the paper mill closed in 2000, but it potentially has a major future. It's centred on the extensive Mataura coalfield which produces good-quality lignite.
State Owned Enterprise, Solid Energy, has been buying up farmland and is now the region's largest land-owner, and underneath - a goodly portion of Southland's 7.2 billion tonnes of lignite.
