Fijian Drua halfback Frank Lomani is nearing a full return to training after having shoulder surgery earlier this year.

FBC reported coach Glen Jackson saying they do not need to rush him, as there's a long time to go before the Drua's first match of Super Rugby 2026, against Moana Pasifika.

Jackson said Lomani was "reasonably close" to returning for the Flying Fijians' November Tests, but after discussions with their coach Mick Byrne the decision was made to prioritise Lomani's long-term health and performance.

The Fijian women's football team has opened their campaign at the MSG Prime Minister's Cup with a 2-1 win over a Papua New Guinea Development team in Port Moresby.

Having led 1-0 at halftime, PNG were not able to contain Fiji in the second spell.

In the men's competition the PNG Development side and Vanuatu fought to a 1-all draw.

The second round of matches will be held on Thursday, with the PNG national team taking on Vanuatu, while the PNG men's side will meet Solomon Islands.

Meanwhile, the New Caledonia men and women's football teams have withdrawn.

The Fiji Under-17 men's football team lost 7-0 to Argentina in their final pool game at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Qatar, on Monday.

It means the Fijians return home without a win from the event, having lost to Belgium and Tunisia in their earlier group D matches.

FBC reported the junior Bula Boys struggled to contain a dominant Argentine side.

Meanwhile, New Caledonia suffered a 16-0 thrashing to Morocco in their final group B game, while Oceania champs New Zealand lost 3-2 to Saudi Arabia.

League

A Vanuatu women's rugby league development side is taking part in a tournament in Fiji later this month.

The Vanuatu Daily Post reported the squad consists of 18 players, including three high school students. Two coaches will accompany the side.

Secretary Jaimeen Paramari Kenni said Vanuatu Rugby League sees the importance of women and girls participating in games, and would like to engage them in more competitions.

The Fijian Cup Rugby League 9s Tournament will take place across 28-29 November at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka.
