Candidate list for Niue General Election released

At the close of nominations at midday local time today, 25 nomination forms for the 14 village seats and 17 candidates competing for the six common roll seats had been received.

Broadcasting Corporation of Niue reports the Premier Dalton Tagelagi has been elected unopposed along with four other incumbents.

Several new MPs will be elected to parliament with several sitting members having already announced they will not contest the election.

The election will be held on April 29.

Common Roll seats

For the Common Roll seats, there are 17 candidates, 10 men and 7 women. Nine are new names to the ballot, three incumbents are seeking re-election, three former ministers who want to try again, and a former New Zealand High Commissioner to Niue.

The candidates have until Thursday April 20 to decide if they wish to withdraw their candidacy. If candidates withdraw they will be reimbursed their $200 nomination fee.
