Telikom says cable repair could take up to two months

Papua New Guinea telecommunications provider, Telikom Ltd, has advised customers in a large part of the country, that its submarine cable suffered multiple damage during last week's earthquake.

It says the breakages affected the Momase, Highlands and Islands provinces that are connected through Madang.

The company further advises that it will take up to two months to repair the breakages, but in the meantime it says it is working on alternative solutions.

The 7.6 magnitude quake resulted in at least 12 deaths, hundreds of injuries and destroyed houses and roads.

An assessment that has been carried out by disaster officials to isolate what help is needed is due to be made public.
