He was on the green for both the 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games in the singles and pairs before he became premier.

Tagelagi won just one match in both Games and was nowhere near a medal.

The premier is one of 10 bowlers in the Niue team, along with four boxers and one weightlifter.

Tagelagi may well be the first elected world leader to compete at a multi-sport global event.

Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi was Samoa's Prime Minister when he contested the archery event at the Pacific Games as a 74-year-old in 2019.

While he failed to hit the target then he did win silver in archery in the 2007 Pacific Games.

There are currently six cases of covid-19 in Niue, all of them at the border.
