Niue MP says island's approach to repatriation unclear, confusing

Long time Niue MP, O'Love Jacobsen, is raising concerns about what she considers Niue's lackadaisical management of covid testing ahead of flights out of Auckland.

She has been stranded in Auckland since early August after leaving Niue for a regular medical treatment.

Mrs Jacobsen said she was due to fly back last Tuesday on the single fortnightly passenger flight, but was barred by Niue officials because she hadn't had her Covid-19 test at the right time.

She said the travel instructions were unclear and she got her test on the previous Friday - to have results in time for theTuesday flight - and officials said it should have been done on the Saturday.

"If you wanted to make it more clearer you say tests must be done on a Saturday. Any time outside of that would disqualify you. To make it more clearer and no misunderstanding for whoever it is," she said.

"You have got to remember these are natives you are telling this story to. Not everybody will understand."

Mrs Jacobsen said she doesn't know when she might next get a chance to fly home.

She said what happened to her is a civil wrong but that there is a far greater need to overhaul Niue's lax systems, else the island will end up letting in Covid.
