The Northern Marianas is expected to receive stimulus cheques worth about $US47 million as part of the $US900 billion federal pandemic relief package.

Though not as big as the $US1,200 that was handed out to taxpayers during the first round of stimulus cheques, Governor Ralph Torres said he was still thankful for the $US600 individual taxpayers will receive under the Covid-19 relief package.

The cheques are expected in about a month.

The new Covid-19 relief bill will also continue the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance which has helped many workers who lost their jobs.

Federal pandemic unemployment compensation will also restart and continue through mid-March although at a reduced weekly rate of $US300.

Public schools will be able to stay open with teachers and other staff paid out of a special fund.

College students are in line for grants and special funds are allocated for institutions such as Northern Marianas College.
