After eliminating the coronavirus with a lockdown seven months ago, the reopening of the border and the abolition of quarantine requirements have seen Covid-19 numbers surge to among the highest levels per capita in the world.

The healthcare system is stretched and France already sent 12 medical staff to assist.

The government said 49 local nursing students had been brought in to alleviate a staff shortage.

The pandemic also hit the media industry, forcing Tahiti Nui TV to abandon its news broadcasts last week.

Almost 13,000 cases have been registered but no figure is given of how many are considered active.
