French Polynesia now at nearly 13,000 Covid cases

French Polynesia recorded another 229 Covid-19 cases in the past day, raising its tally to nearly 13,000.

87 people are in hospital, including 24 in intensive care.

62 people have died in the pandemic whose progression has slowed in recent days.

The outbreak hit Tahiti Nui TV which this week was forced to cancel its news programmes for the first time.

All but 62 cases were detected after the borders were reopened in July and mandatory quarantine requirements were abolished.
