The police chief said four other officers had been suspended over the matter.

Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho said the five officers faced charges of an "act with intent to cause grievous harm, assault causing actual bodily harm and common assault".

Mr Qiliho said one of the officers had also been charged with conspiracy to defeat justice and interfering with witnesses.

He said the officers had been processed at the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters and would appear in court on Friday.

Mr Qiliho said reports where police allegedly abused their authority, would be thoroughly investigated and dealt with.

In April, Opposition parliamentarian Pio Tikoduadua was arrested after he posted a video on Facebook in which he set out allegations of police brutality over the incident in Tailevu.

The National Federation Party president was later released.
