In line with an agreement with France, local schools will teach about the arrival of Wallis in Tahiti, Bougainville's voyage to Tahiti as well the three passages of Captain Cook.

The new curriculum will cover the establishment of the French protectorate, French Polynesia's integration into a globalised world and the significance of tourism.

It will also teach the development of French Polynesia's autonomy within the French republic.

A government statement said the curriculum also covered events in the current era including French nuclear weapons tests.

While highlighting the autonomy status, the statement made no mention of French Polynesia's 2013 reinscription on the United Nations decolonisation list.
