The ABC reports that the killings are linked to inter-tribal conflict and occurred at the border of Hela and Enga provinces.

Enga's provincial police commander, Epenes Nili, said the deaths were revenge killings for tribal attacks dating back three years.

They were not related to a massacre in Hela in July this year when 23 women and children were killed in an attack on one village, he said.
