A new mobile phone provider has entered the market in French Polynesia.

The local internet provider Viti has launched Ora Mobile to become the territory's third mobile phone company after Vini and Vodafone.

The operating licence was issued after years of legal battles which ended with the courts ordering the government to grant Viti a licence.

Ora Mobile will in a first phase only be available for users of iPhone sets which account for about a quarter of French Polynesia's mobile phones.

The launch of Ora Mobile is expected to create about 20 new jobs.
