March for social justice in New Caledonia

An estimated 200 people in New Caledonia have marched through Noumea to demand greater social justice and for wealth to be shared more equitably.

They represented about a dozen groups, which call themselves collectives of civil disobedience.

Their banners call for curbs to the high cost of living, a lower cap for rent in social housing and cheaper public transport.

They also called for a 60 percent hike of the basic salaries.

Local television quotes a marcher as saying that it was inadmissible that about 50,000 people lived below the poverty line in a country as rich as New Caledonia.
