New Caledonia hikes tobacco price

9:12 pm on 4 November 2019

New Caledonia has hiked the price of loose tobacco by 25 percent.

Congress voted for the increase because in growing numbers smokers rolled their own cigarettes to counter the price increase for cigarettes.

It's estimated that as a result, tobacco consumption will decrease by about 10 percent.

The price increase is expected to generate almost $US8 million in extra tax revenue.
