The Director of the American Samoa Historic Preservation Office says plans for the Fagatogo Pavilion Rehabilitation Project did not include a playground and parking.

Tish Peau said in response to KHJ News questions that the plans only included pavers directly in front of the pavilion which would not change the look of the malae.

Ms Peau said the section of the malae being covered with concrete was substantial and she has made known her concerns about the paving to Public Works - the government agency managing the project.

She said federal funding may be jeopardized if nothing is done to mitigate the effects on the historic site, and she says this may mean removing the pavers.

There has been a series of protests by residents over the paving in front of the malae.
