It's unfair on isolated villages that the government isn't contributing to the cost of renovating cyclone shelters said Fiji's opposition leader.

Many small shelters in remote areas were once jointly funded by the government and communities.

The government has said it's instead building stronger cyclone-proof schools which can double as shelters.

But the government has an obligation to help according to Sitiveni Rabuka.

"The issue here is that the government was part of the contruction of those buildings that were damaged or destroyed. So should they not also be part of the rehabilitation, the repair and rennovatio of those for the same use in the future?"
