The transfer was formalised in Papeete, with French Polynesia paying one euro for the area known as Hotuarea.

The land was acquired by the French state about 50 years ago for the airport development.

About 200 families have been living on that strip which has been earmarked for a social housing project to replace an insalubrious settlement.
