The Fiji government says the country's universities are not producing enough research and students are not being prepared well for the future.

The Permanent Secretary for Education Alison Burchell also points out the country's higher educational institutions are not going on to certain lists they should be going to.

Speaking at a Fiji National University symposium in Suva, Ms Burchell said students should be trained to produce quality research.

The dean of the FNU's college of medicine, nursing and health sciences, William May, said the university would use external benchmarks to encourage the faculty to produce better results.
