At the close of nominations yesterday the former Church of Melanesia archbishop was the only nominee.

His appointment was formally announced on the floor of parliament this morning.

Rev Vunagi is expected to take up his new role, replacing Sir Frank Kabui, on 7 July this year which is the day Solomon Islands celebrates its 41st anniversary of independence from Britain.

Rev Vunagi became archbishop in 2009, retiring in 2016.

He returned to his village in Isabel to live a quiet life, only to be recalled to again become the head of Selwyn College earlier this year.
