Vanuatu's opposition is calling on New Zealand to explain why a wharf project in Port Vila is still incomplete.

Ishmael Kalsakau has asked the New Zealand High Commission to explain what's happened with the inter-island ferry wharf project and its funding.

The Vanuatu Project Management Unit has said the project was stopped last year over design concerns.

Mr Kalsakau says the temporary wharf is in a dire state.
