Offers are being sought by the government of French Polynesia to remove a wrecked fishing boat from an atoll in the Tuamotus.

The 29-metre long Taiwanese tuna fishing boat Sheng Long Yu 21 had run onto the reef of North Marutea in late 2017.

Its 14 crew were rescued by the French Polynesian authorities but the capsized boat has been abandoned.

The owner of the vessel Tasi Fu Kao had failed to heed calls to remedy the situation by removing remaining fuel and disposing of the hull.

The government is now seeking bids to salvage the ship amid fear of environmental damage.
