According to Australian media reports, emergency crews were called to the consulate after the package was discovered.

The unopened envelope was put in a container and removed for testing.

Two consulate staff members who were in the office when the envelop arrived were "decontaminated" by a specialist crew.

The suspicious discovery reportedly comes on the back of the arrest and charging of a man in Victoria with posting parcels allegedly containing asbestos to consulates and embassies across Australia.

The Samoan Consulate General in Sydney is Vaasatia Auseugaefa Poloma Komiti, who was until recently the Samoan Consul in American Samoa.
