A group of Papua New Guinea fishermen who had been missing for several days have been found alive and well on Australia's side of the Torres Strait.

The Post Courier newspaper reports the five fishermen were travelling on a 23 foot dinghy powered by an outboard motor when they ran out of fuel and hit rough weather on their return to Daru from a fishing trip last weekend.

PNG police say the five were awaiting repatriation to Daru after being found stranded on Stephen Island off Australia's mainland.
