New Caledonia will restrict the use of plastic from July next year.
The Congress has passed a law banning the import of a range of plastic products, such as bags, cutlery and plates.
The ban was proposed by the Caledonia Together Party and supported by the pro-independence camp.
However, the three smaller anti-independence parties abstained, saying the change is too sudden because local producers need time to source alternative products.
