Vanuatu opposition to challenge MPs over motion reversal

2:19 pm on 7 December 2018

Vanuatu's opposition leader Ishmael Kalsakau is taking legal action against those government MPs who he says reneged on commitments to a motion of no confidence against the government.

The Vanuatu opposition boycotted parliament this morning forcing the speaker to suspend the sitting until Monday next week. 23 November 2018.

The Daily Post reported Mr Kalsakau saying they had signed the motion but withdrew their names on the floor of parliament, causing the motion to be defeated, earlier this week.

Mr, Kalsakau is quoted saying he will clean up what he called the 'poltiical mess' on the parliament floor and implying the leadership code is often seen to be breached by political leaders.

Meanwhile, social media commentary suggested the series of motions against the government are undermining the opposition's credibility.

Prime minister Charlot Salwai has now successfully defeated five motions of no confidence.
