Police in the Papua New Guinea capital, Port Moresby, say they have detained the man they believe responsible for the death of a 26 year old woman earlier this week.

Grace Gavera, an employee of the Education Department, died on Monday of injuries sustained over a series of assaults.

Her former partner, Andy Paro, was caught by police two days later.

Police said that Ms Gavera had been rushed to Port Moresby General Hospital early on Monday morning, having been badly beaten, but Mr Paro appeared and forced her to leave.

He then allegedly attacked her again, killing her.

Police report that relatives of Ms Gavera said Mr Paro had beaten her on a number of previous occasions.
