Radio 1 in Tahiti reported that Moana Greig, who was an unsuccessful candidate for the Tahoeraa Huiraatira in this year's election, has called for his acquittal, claiming he has been the victim of a manipulation.

The court was told that his former partner carried a device to record their argument, with him insisting he never beat her, but fought off her attacks.

The court was told that three days after the alleged altercation, the woman went to see a doctor who gave her four days sick leave after seeing abrasions on her face and neck.

A ruling is expected on 24 January.
