A bill aimed at improving access to New Zealand Superannuation and Veteran's Pension for those living in the Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau has passed its third reading.

The Minister of Social Development, Carmel Sepuloni, said it means those who have lived in New Zealand for 10 years, after the age of 20, can move to any of these countries without having to return to New Zealand to qualify for their pension.
Up until now to qualify a person had to be resident in New Zealand for 10 years after the age of 20, including five years after the age of 50.
The minister said the change recognises the special relationship with the Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau which are part of the Realm of New Zealand and therefore are citizens.
She said all New Zealanders will be able to make use of the provision should they choose to live in the Cook Islands, Niue, or Tokelau.
