The Nauru Government has cancelled the island's hosting of the 2018 Oceania Powerlifting, Benchpress and Para Benchpress championships that were to be held in December.

The government said the decision came following the revelation that the championships were not recognised by the International Powerlifting Federation and therefore rendered the event and any results null and void.
The government said it still encouraged and promoted sports on Nauru, and a powerlifting competition would be held in January next year as part of the nation's 51st Independence Day celebrations.
