A Nauruan security guard convicted of sexually abusing a child at one of the island's refugee centres has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Bronton Namaduk, a 31-year-old Nauruan national, was working at the Anibare Lodge refugee settlement at the time he committed the offence.

Prosecutors said Namaduk abused a Nauruan child under the age of 10 inside a security booth at the centre in 2016.

They said the sexual offence was witnessed by two unidentified men, one of whom recorded a video of the crime on a mobile phone.

The ABC said the victim testified against Namaduk, as did a refugee living at the Anibare Lodge settlement who saw the video.

Nauru's Chief Justice Filimone Jitoko found Namaduk guilty of the charge in August, and sentenced him to eight years in jail.

Namaduk indicated that he plans to appeal against both the conviction and the sentence.
