It aims to make Kiribati an inclusive society, free of barriers for people living with disabilities and one which empowers them to fully participate.

The social affairs minister Kourabi Nenem said the new policy, which runs until 2021, is a fulfilment of the government's manifesto to have everyone included in the running and development of the country.

It also bring the government into line with the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, of which it is a signatory.
