Mr O'Neill said the difficulty Papua New Guinean travellers had in obtaining visas to visit Australia disregarded the historical relationship.

He said the record of Papua New Guineans in complying with visa requirements in Australia was excellent.

He wondered why Papua New Guineans had to jump through hoops while hundreds of thousands of people from places such as the Middle East were given easy access to Australia.

He said he didn't know what some officials in the Australian bureaucracy were worried about.
